Tummel transformer deliveries
The initial phase of work began two years prior to the delivery of the transformers, with Allelys supporting the planning phase by completing a route study to identify a suitable route to a difficult location. The work involved swept path analysis, over 30 structural bridge assessments, tree trimming and numerous site visits.
Allelys identified that the nearest suitable port was Dundee. The transport then needed to navigate Friarton bridge on the A90 at Perth, head north on the A9 to Ballinaluig, continue via the A827 towards Aberfeldy and through Strathtay village to keep north of the River Tay as it could not be crossed in Aberfeldy.
A complex route
The first part of the route, from Dundee to Ballinaluig, was completed on a Saturday afternoon and the second part of the route, to site, was completed the following day with two transformers in convoy. This was to limit the disruption caused within peak times and to the school bus services. Sections of the route were very narrow, with some challenging turns and bridges. The final stage of the route also took the loads up to the snow line and then back down to the valley floor. It took a total of 10 hours to complete the distance of 23 miles due to the challenging route.
Route preparations
A number of route preparations were required prior to the transport, including over bridging two structures, widening the road in a number of places, tree trimming and rock clearance to move the road into the hillside to avoid the load damaging retaining walls on the climb up the hillside.
