SPMT Technician

Job description

The SPMT Technician serves as the technical authority on the maintenance, servicing and fault finding/troubleshooting on SPMT equipment used for transporting heavy and abnormal loads. This position is a hands-on role requiring technical expertise to support the availability and reliability of the SPMT fleet for use on project operations. The role is based at our Studley, head office/base.

Key responsibilities

  • Operational expertise
    • Apply a strong understanding of the SPMT operating principles used primarily in the transport of heavy and oversized cargo.
    • Demonstrate thorough technical knowledge of hydraulic pressure systems, electrical/electronic and mechanical systems, axle line configurations, load distribution, hydraulic stability circuit, suspension controls and power pack units.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting
    • Ensure that all maintenance work on SPMT equipment is carried out in line with manufacturer guidelines.
    • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on SPMT hydraulic, electrical, mechanical and steering systems.
    • Diagnose faults in power pack units, suspension cylinders, steering pumps and electronic control systems.
    • Resolve issues reported on pre-operation checklists and defect reports by field-based operatives.
    • Document and maintain detailed maintenance and service records for the SPMT fleet.
    • Ensure SPMT equipment availability and readiness for mobilisation to project locations.
    • Attend project locations to carry out breakdown maintenance if and when required.
  • Working safely
    • Work as part of a team in a safe and professional manner at all times, and recognise when to stop work should unsafe conditions be observed.
    • Escalate all unsafe acts and conditions appropriately in line with company procedures, HSE standards, best practice and relevant industry codes.
  • Training and mentorship
    • Train and certify operators on SPMT operating procedures.
    • Assist colleagues in the development and delivery of training materials and competency assessments.
    • Mentor junior technicians and assist in building in-house technical capability.

  • Strong team player who works well with operators, engineers and project teams, and who can mentor and develop less experienced colleagues.
  • Clear communicator, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to produce technical reports.
  • Physically fit for fieldwork, with the flexibility and willingness to travel to project sites, which may be remote or international.
  • Calm and effective under pressure when responding to breakdowns or time-critical project demands.

Skills & qualifications required

  • Technical diploma or equivalent in mechanical, hydraulic or heavy equipment engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience maintaining and operating SPMTs in industrial, marine, energy or infrastructure projects.
  • Manufacturer-issued SPMT operator certifications are essential.
  • Strong working knowledge of hydraulic systems, PLC-based controls, load engineering principles and rigging fundamentals.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings (hydraulic and electro-mechanical circuits) and schematic diagrams.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate technical reports on SPMT equipment condition.
  • Physical fitness for fieldwork and a willingness to travel to project sites, which may be remote or international.

Details

  • Position reports to: Garage Manager
  • Location: Studley Warwickshire, with travel to project locations as required.
  • Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday
