Escort Driver

Job description

Driving an escort vehicle in front of or behind an abnormal load as legally required, and assisting with the loading/unloading, steering and escorting of abnormal loads.

Key responsibilities

To drive either behind or in front of the abnormal load as the law requires.
To remain in radio contact with the driver of the abnormal load at all times, ensuring that the flashing lights are operating at all times.
To follow all instructions from the driver.
To assist in loading and unloading the trailer.
To assist in securing the load.
To steer and navigate the trailer, taking care to avoid all obstacles and not to damage any equipment.
To assist in keeping the vehicle clean and tidy both inside and outside.
To check the condition of all chains, tighteners, straps and other securing equipment, and to report any defects immediately to the driver and/or garage.
To use the radios provided to assist with the job in order to communicate with the driver. All defects to be reported immediately.
To conduct the role as directed by the Company and within the guidelines outlined in the Group Rules and Policies, with particular attention to the Drivers’ Rules.
To perform any duty within the Company that is a reasonable request within the performance, skill and ability level of the job.

Additional responsibilities

To perform other duties at certain times when required, and as directed by the Transport Manager. All additional responsibilities listed are subject to having received the correct training and holding valid certificates where applicable.
Yard man – assisting with building trailers, tidying equipment, and preparing equipment such as timbers, chains, straps and spill kits. Duties could also include cleaning and tidying, operating a forklift, and moving and positioning of stools, and general lifting and carrying.
Ramp building – ramp building is a two-man operation, and when required to assist you must be under the instruction of your driver. There is a Company training DVD which demonstrates clearly how this should be done, and you must familiarise yourself with the details.

Skills & qualifications required

Full driving licence.
CPC qualification card an advantage.
Escorting abnormal loads an advantage but not essential.
The ability to work as part of a team as well as on your own initiative.

Details

Position reports to: Operations Manager – Transport
Location: Studley, Warwickshire
Hours: Monday – Friday with weekend working as required
