Precision logistics on the Welsh coast

The project required a 155te transformer, measuring 8,202mm (l) x 5,150mm (w) x 4,399mm (h), to be offloaded on a beach within a restricted tidal window, transported 20 miles through narrow seaside towns whilst negotiating steep gradients, with severe weather and a large number of stakeholders to manage.

The journey began with the ocean vessel collecting the 155te transformer from Rotterdam and travelling to Traeth y Graig Ddu (Black Rock Sands beach), Morfa Bychan in North West Wales. As planned, the natural tide was used to perform a beach landing operation and the tidal window for offload began.

Heavy transport under challenging tidal conditions

The complex task of installing the temporary trackway commenced by following the tide out with trackway until the tide was officially at its lowest point circa 2pm. The critical activities then began, having until circa 5:30pm to complete the temporary ramp, reverse the 12 axle trailer onto the vessel to receive the load, offload the transformer from the vessel and transport it off the beach before the tide started to come back in.

Navigating Extreme Gradients

Once off the beach, the transport configuration began the 20 mile journey. Navigating through the extreme gradients within the Snowdonia area. Following the planned route in a safe and controlled manner. Successfully manoeuvring up and down steep inclines, through tight corners, around roundabouts, down narrow roads and a busy High Street to reach the project site within three hours of leaving the beach.

Jacking & Skidding on site

Once on site, the unit needed to be transferred from the trailer to its foundation. Therefore, a jacking operation needed to be combined with the transport equipment to jack the transformer up off the trailer to a height of 1.5m. The trailer was then removed and the cargo was lowered down onto an Allelys skid system.

Two types of skidding methodology were required due to the site layout. With the transformer lowered onto the first system, a heavy duty skidding system, it was skidded 13.4m before being lowered onto Allelys Teflon skid track as the unit approached the plinth. This provided a low level skid to enable the transformer to be positioned onto its designated foundation.
